Activity guide for this page

Recommended age: Ages 4–7
Estimated time: 15–25 min
Difficulty: Medium
Areas to color: about 16

Coloring order

Fill the big round head in a coral orange-red first, and add the pink blush on the cheeks right after.
Color the winding arms in the same orange-red, and the round suckers on the undersides in light purple.
Finish the big round eyes, the smiling mouth and the curled arm tips in a dark shade.

Questions to talk about

How many arms does the octopus have, and how do they curl?
If the octopus held one thing in each arm, what would they be?
Have you ever stretched out both arms to give someone a big hug?

Take it further

Fold paper strips back and forth into wiggly arms, glue them under a round head, and count how many you made.

Age and time are rough guides for a child coloring alone with pencils or crayons; every child is different. The area count is an estimate counted from the line-art image.

About this image

The black-and-white line art you print and color. Closed shapes and bold outlines make it easy to fill.

Printing and coloring tips

Print on A4 or Letter in portrait to keep the original proportions.
Keep the finished version open beside you while you color.
Use slightly heavier paper with water-based markers so the ink shows through less.
Fill the large areas first and leave the small ones for later.
The finished version is only a suggestion. Any colors you like will work.
