Activity guide for this page

Recommended age: Ages 8–12
Estimated time: 45–60 min
Difficulty: Challenging
Areas to color: about 380

Coloring order

Begin by coloring the broad sky, the puffy clouds and the rainbow at upper right to set the mood high above the ground.
Then color her sky-blue gown with the cloud patterns flowing down the sleeves, and the flowers in her upswept black hair.
Last, color the waterfalls on the floating islands, the gold-roofed castle, the bluebird on the stone railing, the flying birds and the flower vine below.

Questions to talk about

What do you think the princess is trying to show by lifting the gem to the sky?
What kind of paths would you want between the floating islands?
What would you see if you looked down at a town from way up in the sky?

Take it further

Blow soap bubbles outdoors and watch them float up and pop, then imagine how an island could stay up in the sky.

Age and time are rough guides for a child coloring alone with pencils or crayons; every child is different. The area count is an estimate counted from the line-art image.

Printing and coloring tips

Print on A4 or Letter in portrait to keep the original proportions.
Keep the finished version open beside you while you color.
Use slightly heavier paper with water-based markers so the ink shows through less.
Fill the large areas first and leave the small ones for later.
The finished version is only a suggestion. Any colors you like will work.
