Coloring order

  1. Color the top band orange like a tangerine and the bottom band green, leaving the white middle band open around the wheel.
  2. Slowly trace the outer rim of the wheel in the middle with a deep navy, going all the way around in a smooth circle.
  3. Color the thin spokes inside the wheel one by one with a sharp pencil, or fill the narrow gaps between the spokes in navy.

Questions to talk about

  • Where do the spokes of the wheel stretch out to from the center?
  • If this wheel started rolling, how far would you like it to go?
  • Do you remember how the spokes looked when a bicycle wheel spun?

Take it further

Fold a paper plate and open it again, then draw spokes from the center to the edge along the creases to make your own wheel picture.

Age and time are rough guides for a child coloring alone with pencils or crayons; every child is different. The area count is an estimate counted from the line-art image.
