Activity guide for this page

Recommended age: Ages 4–7
Estimated time: 15–25 min
Difficulty: Medium
Areas to color: about 35

Coloring order

Start with the long neck and body in pale yellow or apricot, coloring from head to tail in long strokes.
Then fill the round patches on the neck, body and legs, alternating two shades of brown one patch at a time.
Finish the two little horns, the insides of the ears, the pink cheek and the tuft at the tip of the tail.

Questions to talk about

How do the giraffe's patches change from its neck down to its legs?
If your neck were this long, what would you want to see first?
Have you ever reached for something on a high shelf? How did you do it?

Take it further

Tape long strips of paper together into a tall giraffe neck, draw patches on it, and stand it against the wall to compare with your own height.

Age and time are rough guides for a child coloring alone with pencils or crayons; every child is different. The area count is an estimate counted from the line-art image.

Printing and coloring tips

Print on A4 or Letter in portrait to keep the original proportions.
Keep the finished version open beside you while you color.
Use slightly heavier paper with water-based markers so the ink shows through less.
Fill the large areas first and leave the small ones for later.
The finished version is only a suggestion. Any colors you like will work.
