Activity guide for this page

Recommended age: Ages 4–7
Estimated time: 10–20 min
Difficulty: Medium
Areas to color: about 10

Coloring order

Split the body along its dividing line: deep navy on top, pale white underneath, filling the big areas first.
Color the stripes across the belly, the long side fins and the tail fins in teal.
Finish the water spouting from the top of its head in light blue and white, then add each sparkling droplet one at a time.

Questions to talk about

The whale is spraying water from the top of its head. Why might it do that?
Where do you think this whale is swimming to?
Have you ever been in the sea or a pool? What was it like?

Take it further

Hum a low, long 'oooo' like a whale, then decide together what sound you would use to signal a friend far away.

Age and time are rough guides for a child coloring alone with pencils or crayons; every child is different. The area count is an estimate counted from the line-art image.

About this image

The black-and-white line art you print and color. Closed shapes and bold outlines make it easy to fill.

Printing and coloring tips

Print on A4 or Letter in portrait to keep the original proportions.
Keep the finished version open beside you while you color.
Use slightly heavier paper with water-based markers so the ink shows through less.
Fill the large areas first and leave the small ones for later.
The finished version is only a suggestion. Any colors you like will work.
