Coloring order

  1. Color the scales on Verdax's upper body in two alternating greens, and the banded belly in pale yellow.
  2. Use yellow and light green to tell apart the pointed crown-like crest behind the head and the leaf shape at the tail tip.
  3. Last, add the flicking tongue, the thick claws on all four legs and the round eye in red and dark brown.

Questions to talk about

  • What does the crown behind Verdax's head look like to you?
  • What might Verdax be sensing with its flicking tongue?
  • Have you seen a picture of a snake or lizard? What caught your eye?

Take it further

Cut small scale shapes from green paper and overlap them on a long paper strip to make one piece of Verdax's body.

Age and time are rough guides for a child coloring alone with pencils or crayons; every child is different. The area count is an estimate counted from the line-art image.
