Coloring order

Color the three horizontal bands first, black on top, red in the middle and green at the bottom, leaving the thin white lines between them empty.
Color the outer parts of the oval shield in the middle red and black, and leave the thin white stripes inside the shield.
Leave the pointed tips poking out above and below the shield white or a pale color, then tidy up anywhere you went over the lines.

Take it further

Cut an oval shield from paper, draw your own pattern on it, and tape two paper straws behind it in an X to make a shield decoration.
