Coloring order
- First color the top and bottom bands the same red, then fill the wide middle band yellow, working around the coat of arms.
- Give each small section of the shield its own color, and color the two pillars on either side golden yellow or brown.
- Save the crown on top and the ribbons wound around the pillars for last, using a sharp pencil. Try red for the ribbons.
Questions to talk about
- Which do you notice first: the crown, the pillars or the shield?
- If you made your own coat of arms, what would you draw inside it?
- Is there a color or an animal that stands for your family?
Take it further
Cut a paper shield, divide it into four boxes, and draw yourself, your family, something you love and a dream, one in each box.
Age and time are rough guides for a child coloring alone with pencils or crayons; every child is different. The area count is an estimate counted from the line-art image.
