Coloring order

  1. Start with the sloping stone wall rising beneath Himeji Castle, using one or two mixed grays and browns.
  2. Leave the white walls of the tall main building white or very pale gray, and alternate dark gray and navy on its stacked tile roofs, layer by layer.
  3. Last, use a fine pencil to color the curved gables at the roof ends, the small windows and the eaves of the little tower beside it.

Questions to talk about

  • Counting from the bottom up, how many layers of roof can you find?
  • What would the view be like from a window at the top of the castle?
  • Have you ever stacked stones or blocks high? How did you keep them from falling?

Take it further

Stack paper boxes from biggest to smallest and top each with a paper roof to build a small castle. Talk about why the bottom layer should be the widest.

Age and time are rough guides for a child coloring alone with pencils or crayons; every child is different. The area count is an estimate counted from the line-art image.
