- Estimated time
- 45–70 min

- Challenging
- Areas to color
- about 400
Coloring order
- Start with the sloping stone wall rising beneath Himeji Castle, using one or two mixed grays and browns.
- Leave the white walls of the tall main building white or very pale gray, and alternate dark gray and navy on its stacked tile roofs, layer by layer.
- Last, use a fine pencil to color the curved gables at the roof ends, the small windows and the eaves of the little tower beside it.
Questions to talk about
- Counting from the bottom up, how many layers of roof can you find?
- What would the view be like from a window at the top of the castle?
- Have you ever stacked stones or blocks high? How did you keep them from falling?
Take it further
Stack paper boxes from biggest to smallest and top each with a paper roof to build a small castle. Talk about why the bottom layer should be the widest.
Age and time are rough guides for a child coloring alone with pencils or crayons; every child is different. The area count is an estimate counted from the line-art image.
