Coloring order

  1. Color the square body of Belem Tower in beige and light sand, and set the dark stone base at the bottom apart in deep gray-blue.
  2. Paint the twin arched windows, the small jutting balcony and the blue windows in deep blue, and match the low wall to the beige of the tower.
  3. Last, alternate colors on the round roofs of the little lookout turrets at each corner and the tooth-shaped bumps along the top of the wall.

Questions to talk about

  • Why do you think the top of the wall is shaped like teeth?
  • If you kept watch from one of the small corner turrets, what would you see far away?
  • If you had a secret hideout, where in this tower would you put it?

Take it further

Build walls and lookout turrets from boxes and cardboard tubes, cut a toothed edge along the top of the paper wall, and tell a lookout-guard story with a doll.

Age and time are rough guides for a child coloring alone with pencils or crayons; every child is different. The area count is an estimate counted from the line-art image.
