Coloring order

  1. Start with the wide stone base of Sungnyemun in a gray-brown, and vary the shade slightly from stone to stone.
  2. Make the inside of the arched gate dark, then color the two stacked tile roofs, upper and lower, in deep navy or gray.
  3. Last, slowly color the green and red patterns under the eaves and the curved roof tips with a fine pencil.

Questions to talk about

  • There are two layers of roof. How do the upper and lower roofs differ?
  • What kind of scene would you find if you walked through the arched gate?
  • Have you seen an old gate or building in your neighborhood?

Take it further

Fold a long strip of paper into an eave shape, glue it on, and decorate underneath it with green and red stripes to invent your own gate pattern.

Age and time are rough guides for a child coloring alone with pencils or crayons; every child is different. The area count is an estimate counted from the line-art image.
