Activity guide for this page

Recommended age: Ages 5–8
Estimated time: 20–30 min
Difficulty: Medium
Areas to color: about 9

Coloring order

Divide the gray wolf into dark gray on the back and lighter gray on the belly and legs, and fill those big areas first.
For the thick ruff from face to chest, use pale gray and cream in short strokes that follow the direction of the fur.
Last, color the sharp eyes and nose in a dark shade, and darken the tip of the long tail hanging down behind.

Questions to talk about

Which way are the wolf's ears pointing? What might it be listening to?
If this wolf walked through the mountains at night, what would it see?
Have you ever walked somewhere in a line with your friends?

Take it further

Draw what lies behind the wolf: a moonlit forest, a snowy hill, or any scene you imagine, and finish the whole picture.

Age and time are rough guides for a child coloring alone with pencils or crayons; every child is different. The area count is an estimate counted from the line-art image.

The black-and-white line art you print and color. Closed shapes and bold outlines make it easy to fill.

Printing and coloring tips

Print on A4 or Letter in portrait to keep the original proportions.
Keep the finished version open beside you while you color.
Use slightly heavier paper with water-based markers so the ink shows through less.
Fill the large areas first and leave the small ones for later.
The finished version is only a suggestion. Any colors you like will work.
