Activity guide for this page

Recommended age: Ages 3–5
Estimated time: 10–20 min
Difficulty: Easy
Areas to color: about 10

Coloring order

Color the koala's round body and head gray first, matching the outside of the big round ears.
Then fill the trunk it is hugging with two shades of brown, using long strokes up and down.
Last come the white fluff inside the ears, the pale chest, and the big dark nose and eyes.

Questions to talk about

How is the koala holding on to the tree with its arms and legs?
What do you think the koala sees from up in the tree?
Have you ever given someone a big hug? How did it feel?

Take it further

Sit on the floor and hug a long cushion or rolled blanket with your arms and legs like a koala, then talk about how it feels.

Age and time are rough guides for a child coloring alone with pencils or crayons; every child is different. The area count is an estimate counted from the line-art image.

About this image

The black-and-white line art you print and color. Closed shapes and bold outlines make it easy to fill.

Printing and coloring tips

Print on A4 or Letter in portrait to keep the original proportions.
Keep the finished version open beside you while you color.
Use slightly heavier paper with water-based markers so the ink shows through less.
Fill the large areas first and leave the small ones for later.
The finished version is only a suggestion. Any colors you like will work.
