Activity guide for this page

Recommended age: Ages 5–8
Estimated time: 20–30 min
Difficulty: Medium
Areas to color: about 70

Coloring order

Start with the forest-like big areas: Sol's wide-brimmed hat, beige shirt and olive pants.
Color the binoculars on her chest, the little notebook in her hand and the tree-shaped badge on her shirt each in a different color.
Finish with the hand she waves high, her long tied-back hair and her sturdy hiking boots.

Questions to talk about

What would Park Ranger Sol like to find in the forest with her binoculars?
What do you think she is writing in her notebook about today?
Have you ever watched trees, insects or birds in a forest or park?

Take it further

Find fallen leaves or pebbles near home, look at them closely, and record their shapes and colors in a drawing like a ranger's notebook.

Age and time are rough guides for a child coloring alone with pencils or crayons; every child is different. The area count is an estimate counted from the line-art image.

About this image

The black-and-white line art you print and color, with clear outlines and wide areas that suit younger children.

Printing and coloring tips

Print on A4 or Letter in portrait to keep the original proportions.
Keep the finished version open beside you while you color.
Use slightly heavier paper with water-based markers so the ink shows through less.
Fill the large areas first and leave the small ones for later.
The finished version is only a suggestion. Any colors you like will work.
