Coloring order

  1. Color Gryphara's spread wings cream near the body and orange at the tips, changing the shade a little from one feather row to the next.
  2. Use soft yellow for the eagle-like head and fluffy chest feathers, and a golden tan for the lion-like back half of the body.
  3. Last, color the sharp front talons, the hind paws and the tufted tail at the lower left in brown and orange.

Questions to talk about

  • Which does Gryphara look more like, the bird or the lion? Why do you think so?
  • What might you see looking down from high above at dawn?
  • If you grew wings, where would you fly first?

Take it further

Make wide wings from newspaper strips, hold them against your arms and flap slowly like Gryphara, showing high places and low places with your body.

Age and time are rough guides for a child coloring alone with pencils or crayons; every child is different. The area count is an estimate counted from the line-art image.
