Coloring order

  1. Blend Pyraxis's tall raised wings row by row: yellow near the body, orange in the middle and red toward the tips.
  2. Alternate yellow and orange for the layered feathers on the chest and body, and add a touch of red to the crest on the head.
  3. Finish the long, flame-like tail feathers flowing downward, and the talons, in pink and red.

Questions to talk about

  • Where is Pyraxis spreading its fiery wings?
  • After this bird flies past, what colors stay in the sky?
  • Can you recall a sunset or warm lamplight you have seen?

Take it further

Cut long strips from red, orange and yellow paper, overlap them into a streamer like Pyraxis's tail feathers, and hang it on the wall.

Age and time are rough guides for a child coloring alone with pencils or crayons; every child is different. The area count is an estimate counted from the line-art image.
