Activity guide for this page

Recommended age: Ages 6–9
Estimated time: 15–25 min
Difficulty: Medium
Areas to color: about 19

Coloring order

Color the deep navy background first, leaving the four stars on the right the white of the paper and coloring around them.
In the upper left corner, color the cross and X pattern in red and blue, and keep the white bands between them.
Color the inside of the four stars red, stopping just inside the edge so a thin white border stays around each star.

Questions to talk about

What shape would you make by connecting the four stars with lines?
If you named this group of stars, what would you call it?
Where did you see stars best on a dark night?

Take it further

On black paper, dot four stars with a white pencil, connect them with lines, and give your shape a name to introduce to your family.

Age and time are rough guides for a child coloring alone with pencils or crayons; every child is different. The area count is an estimate counted from the line-art image.

Printing and coloring tips

Print on A4 or Letter in portrait to keep the original proportions.
Keep the finished version open beside you while you color.
Use slightly heavier paper with water-based markers so the ink shows through less.
Fill the large areas first and leave the small ones for later.
The finished version is only a suggestion. Any colors you like will work.
