Coloring order

  1. Color each curving terrace row in alternating light and dark green so the layers stand out like steps on the hillside.
  2. Paint the waving boy's wide straw hat, white embroidered shirt, black pants and sandals one part at a time.
  3. Finish with the little thatched hut under a yellow roof, the palm tree on the right, the clouds and the grass in front.

Questions to talk about

  • Why do you think rice fields are shaped like stairs on a hill?
  • What might a day be like for someone who lives in that little hut?
  • What greeting would you give to the waving boy?

Take it further

Cut green and brown paper into long curved strips and glue them in layers on a plate to build a small terrace field model.

Age and time are rough guides for a child coloring alone with pencils or crayons; every child is different. The area count is an estimate counted from the line-art image.
