- Medium
- Areas to color
- about 8
Coloring order
- On the map of Japan, slowly color the biggest island, which stretches long through the middle, red like the flag above, following its edge.
- Color the island at the upper right end and the islands at the lower left in slightly different shades to show they are separate.
- Color the small islands around the big one last, putting a dot on each as you finish so none are missed.
Questions to talk about
- What does the long line of islands remind you of?
- What would you see crossing from island to island by boat?
- Have you ever ridden in a boat on the sea or a lake?
Take it further
Fold a paper boat from newspaper, float it in a basin of water, and sail a toy from one island to the next. Do water play with a grown-up.
Age and time are rough guides for a child coloring alone with pencils or crayons; every child is different. The area count is an estimate counted from the line-art image.

Printing and coloring tips
- Print on A4 or Letter in portrait to keep the original proportions.
- Keep the finished version open beside you while you color.
- Use slightly heavier paper with water-based markers so the ink shows through less.
- Fill the large areas first and leave the small ones for later.
- The finished version is only a suggestion. Any colors you like will work.
