Coloring order
- Cover the rescue car's boat-like rounded lower hull and body in one big layer of orange first.
- Alternate red and white on the life ring hanging at the back, and use gray for the light bar on the roof and the dark pipe rising beside the windshield.
- Color the splashes around the wheels and the lake in two blues, then finish with the dock and boathouse on the right and the faraway mountains.
Questions to talk about
- Who is this car on its way to rescue from the water?
- When the wheels sink into the water, what shape do the ripples make?
- What promise would you like to keep when playing near water with a grown-up?
Take it further
Fill a basin with water and test whether little boats made from paper cups or foil float. Do it with a grown-up, and keep the floor from getting wet.
Age and time are rough guides for a child coloring alone with pencils or crayons; every child is different. The area count is an estimate counted from the line-art image.
