Coloring order

  1. Start big with the muscle car's long, flat hood, roof and sides in one heavy color like deep blue.
  2. Color the two long vents side by side on the hood, the round headlights and the silvery bumper, then the yellow dashes on the road.
  3. At the end, use orange, green and brown for the red rock mesas far away, the tall cactus, the wooden fence and the roadside bushes.

Questions to talk about

  • The cactus looks like it is waving. What would it say to a passing car?
  • The road curves away into the distance. What might be waiting there?
  • Have you ever really wanted something cool on a hot day? What did you drink?

Take it further

Draw a desert scene on the back of a box and stand it up. Cut green paper cacti, stick them on and make a long road for a toy car.

Age and time are rough guides for a child coloring alone with pencils or crayons; every child is different. The area count is an estimate counted from the line-art image.
