Activity guide for this page

Recommended age: Ages 3–6
Estimated time: 10–15 min
Difficulty: Easy
Areas to color: about 15

Coloring order

Color the top band of the flag a deep black, following the curving lower edge slowly as it ripples.
Color the middle band red and the bottom band yellow so the three stripes stack up in order from top to bottom.
Color the ball on top of the pole gray and the hill green, then add the flowers last in any colors.

Questions to talk about

In what order do the colors sit from top to bottom?
If you only had a black, a red and a yellow crayon, what would you draw?
How would the flag move on a day with very strong wind?

Take it further

Tape a paper flag to a straw, wave it or blow on it gently, and watch how the flag moves more the stronger the wind is.

Age and time are rough guides for a child coloring alone with pencils or crayons; every child is different. The area count is an estimate counted from the line-art image.

Printing and coloring tips

Print on A4 or Letter in portrait to keep the original proportions.
Keep the finished version open beside you while you color.
Use slightly heavier paper with water-based markers so the ink shows through less.
Fill the large areas first and leave the small ones for later.
The finished version is only a suggestion. Any colors you like will work.
