Coloring order

  1. Color the three pyramids standing side by side in the back a pale sand color first, changing the shade a little along the stacked-stone lines.
  2. Split the Sphinx's face and head covering between two yellows, and outline the eyes and mouth in brown so they stand out.
  3. Alternate yellow and orange on the stone body and the two huge paws stretched forward, and color the sand under its feet last.

Questions to talk about

  • Where do you think the Sphinx is looking?
  • If a friend had a lion's body and a human face, what stories might happen?
  • Have you ever played in sand? What did you build?

Take it further

Pile sand in a tray or sandbox into a pyramid, then shape a lying-down Sphinx from damp sand and set it in front.

Age and time are rough guides for a child coloring alone with pencils or crayons; every child is different. The area count is an estimate counted from the line-art image.
