Coloring order

  1. Begin with the stacked stone terraces of Borobudur, alternating dark gray and light gray from layer to layer.
  2. Color the inside of each hole in the small bell-shaped towers dark, and the body of each tower a medium gray.
  3. Last, color the girl's yellow flowered top, red skirt and sash, the palm tree on the left and the sandy path.

Questions to talk about

  • If a tower has diamond-shaped holes, what could you see from inside?
  • How would you feel climbing the steps one by one up to the top?
  • If you tucked a flower in your hair, which flower would you pick?

Take it further

Flatten clay into layers and stack them, set a small bell shape on top, then press diamond-shaped holes into it with a pencil tip.

Age and time are rough guides for a child coloring alone with pencils or crayons; every child is different. The area count is an estimate counted from the line-art image.
