Coloring order

  1. Color El Castillo's stepped body in sand and gray-brown, alternating the two colors level by level so the stacked shape shows.
  2. Paint the long staircase running straight up the middle of the front in one dark color so it separates from the side walls.
  3. Give the small temple on top its own color, then lightly go over the thin lines between the stones with a pencil crayon at the end.

Questions to talk about

  • This pyramid is built in steps. What might be waiting at the very top?
  • If you climbed the stairs one by one, what would you see from the top?
  • Have you ever climbed a lot of stairs? How did you feel on the way up?

Take it further

Cut cardboard squares from large to small, stack them into a stepped pyramid, and set a tiny box on top like a temple.

Age and time are rough guides for a child coloring alone with pencils or crayons; every child is different. The area count is an estimate counted from the line-art image.
