Ways to use this collection
Laly the ladybug, Bebe the honeybee, a butterfly, Banti the firefly and Dori the dragonfly make five insects with a color reference and a line drawing each, ten pages in all. Their wings and active times differ, so you can decorate both a sunny flower meadow and a summer night, and with only five designs it divides easily among groups.
Activity ideas
- How many legs does an insect have? Count legs and wings on all five pages together, write them in a small chart, and look for what they share.
- The butterfly page is great for practicing symmetry: encourage children to repeat the colors and pattern from the left wing exactly on the right.
- Color Banti the firefly, cut it out and paste it on dark navy paper, and the page becomes a night sky; use yellow pencil to make the glowing tail stand out.
Tip Insects are small, so give four-year-olds a blunt crayon for the big wings only, and move to colored pencils for patterns from about age 6.
