Ways to use this collection
Otter, whale, dolphin, sea turtle, octopus, seahorse and the clownfish in the anemone make seven animals that live in or near water, shown in 14 pages of color references and line drawings. From the otter by the river to the clownfish among the anemone, each lives in a different watery place worth talking about as you color.
Activity ideas
- Paste the seven cut-out animals onto blue paper to make a big fish tank, and decide together where the river otter goes compared with the deeper-water animals.
- Why does the clownfish stay beside the anemone? Hear the children's ideas first, check with a picture book or a video, and color the anemone's tentacles in many shades.
- Color the otter in a single brown and the octopus in five or more colors, then discuss how one color and many colors feel different.
Tip Whales, dolphins and the octopus have large bodies, so crayons work quickly, while seahorse and clownfish patterns reward slow colored pencil work; aim for age 4 and up.
