Coloring order

  1. Color the hedgehog's spiky back in two browns, following the direction of the spines, and give the face and belly a soft cream.
  2. Use deep brown for the bucket, the chestnuts and the shiny nuts in the open husks, and light green and yellow for the prickly husks.
  3. Last, do the tree trunk and stump on the right, the red spotted mushrooms, the brown acorns and the oak leaves.

Questions to talk about

  • Why do you think chestnut husks have sharp spines?
  • Where will the hedgehog store the chestnuts it gathered?
  • Have you ever seen acorns or nuts in a park or forest?

Take it further

Draw each pinecone, acorn or leaf you meet on a walk onto a card to make autumn observation cards. Just look at what you find; do not taste it.

Age and time are rough guides for a child coloring alone with pencils or crayons; every child is different. The area count is an estimate counted from the line-art image.
