Coloring order

  1. Color the statue's two arms stretched wide and the long robe falling down its body in pale gray or cream, in big smooth strokes.
  2. Use a slightly darker gray for the head and face and for the vertical folds falling across the chest, to give it depth.
  3. Color the big square pedestal below in dark gray or brown, and finish with the stepped section at the top of the pedestal.

Questions to talk about

  • With arms spread so wide, what feeling does this statue show?
  • Standing so high up, what might the statue see below?
  • Have you ever opened your arms to hug someone? How did it feel?

Take it further

Shine a flashlight or sunlight so your shadow lands on a wall, then spread, raise and lower your arms to change your shadow's shape.

Age and time are rough guides for a child coloring alone with pencils or crayons; every child is different. The area count is an estimate counted from the line-art image.
