Coloring order

  1. Color the stacked terraces of Borobudur block by block, alternating gray and ochre-brown on the stones.
  2. Paint the biggest bell-shaped stupa in the middle and the smaller ones on each side gray, and fill the diamond-shaped holes with a dark color.
  3. Last, color the wide staircase going straight up the middle, the low walls beside it and the pointed tip on top of each stupa.

Questions to talk about

  • The stupas have holes in them. What might you see through the holes?
  • What would you like to talk about while climbing all the way to the top?
  • Have you seen something full of small holes? How did light pass through it?

Take it further

Have a grown-up cut small diamond holes in a paper cup, cover a flashlight with it in a dim room and watch the hole pattern glow on the wall.

Age and time are rough guides for a child coloring alone with pencils or crayons; every child is different. The area count is an estimate counted from the line-art image.
