Coloring order

  1. Color the brown cliff that the monastery clings to in clay yellow and gray-brown, changing the shade slightly on each cracked rock face.
  2. Keep the stacked white walls of the buildings close to white, then color the red band near the top of each wall and the round golden spots in it.
  3. Last, color the red roofs, the golden finials on top and the brown lattice windows.

Questions to talk about

  • How do you think people carried building materials up to this cliff?
  • If you sat at a window at the cliff's edge, how would you feel?
  • Have you ever stood near a cliff or a high hill? What did it feel like?

Take it further

Crumple newspaper into a cliff, then glue small boxes in layers to hang a tiny house on it. Work out with friends how to keep the boxes from falling.

Age and time are rough guides for a child coloring alone with pencils or crayons; every child is different. The area count is an estimate counted from the line-art image.
